Agricultural Finance in Uganda

Thanks to my amazing amiga Jacqui Watts who started this project and got me involved,  I will be working with her, Groundwork Opportunities and Ugandan entrepreneur Peter Luswata to continue development of a microfinance program run through Peter’s organization, Uganda Rural Community Support Foundation. (URCSF).  URCSF provides sustainable agricultural training and support to farmers in the region through several different projects.

The goal is that the program will allow farmers to either start new supplemental income businesses (such as a selling chicken eggs) or to buy equipment and other agricultural inputs for their existing businesses.

The grant that Jacqui applied for and received was through  HCD Connect – a project of Ideo.org and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  The HCD process stands for Human Centered Design, or Hear, Create, Deliver, and is a three step process for designing and implementing a new project in developing countries.  It is super interesting worth checking out.  The way they present it is very creative and to the point.  http://www.hcdconnect.org/methods

My role will be interviewing farmers, running workshops to help the people in the region understand micrfinance and its risks, and documenting everything step-by-step.

Updates coming in my journal let me know what you think 🙂
